Can’t get to a STEM camp near you? Don’t worry there are still options! Many online offerings are popping up that also offer a diverse range of courses and themes. Connected Camps is one such experience that can introduce kids (8-13yrs old) to coding using Minecraft. Important to note that Connected Camps programs actually run all year round. Their online coding program offers specific summer camp options that are free to members. Now, no doubt this will be a different experience than a more traditional setting; however, for those kids that might have a more mature disposition, this could be worth a look.
What We Like About It
For one, the cost. Among STEM camps we investigated most of the weekly costs can run a wide range, but we see few that are under $100 for a week. On a month-to-month basis, Connected Camps memberships are $39.95 per month (first month free). Joining on an annual basis drops the cost further. You will need your own equipment and internet access, but assuming you already have that setup, there shouldn’t be too much in the way of added cost.
Beyond cost, we do like the integration and focus on Minecraft to get kids involved in coding. The camps are run in one-week intervals and campers are allowed to collaborate with both counselors and other campers. While you might not want your children parked in front of a screen all day, camp sessions run for 90 minutes which we think is a good length. Lastly, offering campers different themed sessions should provide a diverse enough range of activities.
