What is STEM?

What is STEM?  Science, technology, engineering and math are everywhere.  Our way and quality of life depends on new STEM advancements.  For example, try to think of a single area of life that has not been touched by STEM.  And yet, despite its significance, and importance there are literally millions of STEM-related jobs that simply cannot be filled.

STEM-related job growth outpaces non-STEM career paths by three times.  What’s even more notable, STEM job salaries out-pay non-STEM jobs by 12-30% across education levels.

One of the biggest reasons for the lack of candidates has to do with how we prepare and introduce our children to STEM fields.  We need to prepare our students for the STEM careers of tomorrow.  Alright, while you might be able to answer the question “What is STEM”, the next question is likely:  But how?  We think the best way to help children become STEM-literate adults is to introduce them to STEM concepts early, and in a fun, accessible format to keep them engaged.  A recent survey by 4-H backs this up as many kids are excited by STEM careers and applied learning.  With new toys and guides, this is easier than ever even if your own STEM experience is limited.

A FEW REASONS WE LOVE STEM:

STEM is cool!  While science and math may have been considered nerdy in the past, today’s STEM toys move far beyond what you played with as a child.  More importantly, current toys offer really neat ways to learn and have fun.  Maker projects allow kids to build smart robots, or use a kit to create a color-changing slime.

STEM is exciting!  From the first time we introduced our kids to acid/base reactions which fueled a bottle rocket, to the time we built a drone, we saw these toys excite young kids.  And that sparks curiosity and future learning!

You can make a difference with STEM!  STEM is everywhere.  Literally! It’s no understatement.  Beyond playing video games, use STEM to do good, make change or solve problems.  Teach children about renewable energy, how to grow food or clean water.  Simply put, impressing upon kids that STEM can be used to make lives better is important on so many levels.

There’s always something new to learn!  After decades in the STEM space, we continue to learn something new every single day… and what’s great about that is that there are always new challenges to tackle.  Additionally, if your child is less interested in biology but loves technology, they can go a mile deep in different facets and never run out of things to do.
