DMA’s Jr. Adventures
Digital Media Academy’s Kids STEM camp programs boast a “World-Class STEM & Tech Courses For Kids”. After reviewing the offerings and courses, we agree. DMA’s Jr. Adventures program offers media/tech focused-one week programs that cover areas like game design, 3D modeling, robotics and film/media.
Participants do not need prior programming experience. So, this should be accessible to a broad range of students. DMA’s Jr. Adventures offers several “add-on” options that might be useful for families. Things like food options for the week and supplemental online courses are available for purchase (see the website for more info).
While DMA is based in San Francisco, DMA’s Jr. Adventures programs are offered in locations nationwide: Los Angeles, San Diego, Boston, Virginia, New York, Chicago. Also important, these programs are open to students in 2nd-7th grade. If you live in any of these locations, be sure to check the course offerings for more specific details on camps in your area.
What We Like About It
First, all students get their own Apple computer to work on — this would seem important! Having enrolled our own kids in STEM summer programs, there is nothing wrong with sharing by any stretch. However, allowing kids to work on a single machine has its benefits. Even though campers use individual equipment, everyone is encouraged to work on group projects. Great for emphasizing teamwork and communication skills! Also a plus, DMA offers low teacher/student ratios.
DMA’s curriculum definitely stands out versus other programs. Their emphasis on themes like design and art is apparent throughout the entire curriculum. How so? They offer unique courses/programs such as music design/production (aka how to be a DJ), photography and film making. Very cool!! Have a camper with a creative side? DMA’s Jr. Adventures may be just what you’re looking for to liven up the summer!
