Founded in 2013, the GSTEM program is a summer camp located on the NYU campus that caters to high school girls with high aptitude in STEM areas. GSTEM is a deep, immersion program and research experience that runs six weeks. Beyond driving an intensive research project, campers pair with faculty and current student mentors from NYU and other local universities including Columbia, Fordham, and Pace. Applying for GSTEM admission is competitive (~40 are accepted each year). With that in mind, check out the GSTEM site’s application information if you are interested. Apply early! Also important, this is a commuter program. That means campers must secure their own housing.
What We Like About It
First, students gain real-world lab and technical skills. That’s invaluable experience! We think this pushes students ahead of the game early. Second, GSTEM isn’t a program where you meet for an hour with a faculty member and move on. Think: intense research program. Faculty mentors provide an in-depth research project for students to manage during the program. Students also get college credit for their research experience. Another nice benefit down the road as students enter college. One thing to note: no housing is provided. We can see where this might prevent some students from applying. Nevertheless, we think the camp’s duration and exposure to various mentors/experiences overcome these limitations.
