Drone Innovation Camp
Calling all those East Coasters: if your kids express similar interests, then check out the Drone Innovation Camp at Duke University (check out their home page here).
What will they learn at Drone Innovation Camp? All things drone of course! Beyond learning about drone history and how drones fly, campers delve into drone projects that teach them about drone coding and building, and even how to pull off drone maneuvers. Campers even 3D print their own designs! Take a look at the video below from the camp’s main site.
Two camp formats — overnight, daycamp – offer slightly different options for campers. There’s also a cost differential between the two types (overnight: $3000). Day campers still gain a broad experience, while overnight campers have opportunities to have a little more fun with fellow attendees as they stay in dorms. At the end of the two-week camp, attendees participate in Precision Hawk Day which is sponsored by PrecisionHawk, a North Carolina-based drone company. Drone Innovation Campers get a chance to meet and talk with professional drone pilots.
What We Like About It
At first glance, we see many similarities between this camp and some of the other engineering camps like KSI. But, the unique focus on drones is something we’ve not stumbled across very often. Yet, it touches on so many STEM areas at once — design, creativity, technology and engineering. Incorporating 3D printing and robotics, also another cool touch and useful to demonstrate to kids how mashing up different technologies creates useful/cool tools. Lastly, the exposure not only to students/staff in a university setting, but also professionals in the space is super useful to inspire kids and demonstrate that STEM careers can be fun! Hearing first hand about HOW drones are used (beyond super cool racing) also shows the reach STEM roles offer.
